that as much in these campaigns? >> guest: campaigns like the obama campaign is smart like that. they do send people out to do the i.t.. in a statistical model in 2008, the obama campaign was basically modeling the electorate in the swing states every week which was to say that they would put out tens of thousands of pay phone calls and all the volunteers doing the talking to the voters and that is all of the data their body for the commercial lenders feeding into these algorithms and every week they come up with a new projection of how each individual would vote and whether they would vote and allowed by the canvassers to talk to people about particular issues, and so, there is less of a need to do all of your identification work individually. it helps to have the volunteer activities. but then one of the shift in the obama campaign this year that they are going to be using the canvas for more for persuasion and not just for the ayittey in his berkeley the campaigns usually thought of it as i used my volunteer to do this sort of a grunt work of going out and asking people who they are going

your fear of the word "terrorism." obama, the white house, his whole foreign policy team, they're dealing with a completely bizarre scandal related to the attacks in benghazi, driven by the fact that they spent a week after they knew this was probably a terrorist attack insisting that it was all about an anti-muslim voe and had very little to do with terror. i'm not sure what their theory is. it's part of a broader pattern where the obama white house wants to continue george w. bush's anti-terror policies, even expand them in terms of drone strikes and so on without completely acknowledging what they're doing. but in this case, it's made them look ridiculous. it seems unnecessary. >> i've lived in the middle east and in libya. and nothing that you see is as it seems. you don't have any idea who these people r. they showed up with grenade launch easy and sophisticated weapons. but in libya today, everybody's got some. >> that's fine. you don't even have to say, this is definitely terrorism. you just don't spend a week saying, well, it's all about this video that was made in sout

for the obama white house waging what has been an uphill battle against unemployment. this week the labor department reported the jobless rate fell sharply in september to 7.8%. that's the same level it was when president obama took office back in january 2009. actual growth last month was modest, only 114,000 jobs created. but the labor department also revised the july and august numbers to include an additional 86,000 new jobs. let's talk about it with the former white house chief economist austin goulsby. austin, thanks very much for coming in. what does this jobs report mean to you? >> well, i think it's a good sign. you know when i was in the white house i used to say every month good or bad, you never want to make too much out of any one month's numbers because it's plus or minus 100,000 jobs is the margin of error. so there's a lot of variability. >> what does that mean? >> this is a solid report. >> when you say plus or minus margin of error of 100,000 jobs, in other words if 114,000 jobs were created last month, it really could have 214,000 or it could have been 14,000? >> or 14,

obama among likely voters leads by three points, 49 to 46. that's down from a five-point edge that he had in our poll just about three weeks ago. if you also look at the nbc "wall street journal" maris swing state polls, he's pulled even with president obama in the state of florida. that's the biggest swing state, 29 electoral votes. if you go then to virginia, he's also pulled within two points in virginia. he had been down four or five before. the bad news for romney in these three polls is that in ohio, a state that is critical, romney strategists think they have to win florida and ohio to get to 270 electoral votes. he's still down eight percentage points, and what we've seen across these polls is that obama is increasingly competitive with romney on who would do best to handle the economy. but the fact that we've got a little bit of movement nationally and movement in florida and virginia tells me that there's still some play in this electorate, in this contest, and that's the hope for romney going into this debate tonight. >> what do you think happened in florida versus in ohio?

five weeks, what, the next four years will be no better than last four years, something like that. very positive. if you elect obama. i happen to believe that star and that's why i'm not for reelection president obama but is not a very inspiring forward-looking spoken about what mid-romney will do. it's hard to blame the guy who wants to get reelected with a pretty narrow cast, casting approach to democratic and independent constituencies to try to scare them about ron is just bush, there is a war on women and all that but i don't go get the kind of frame you would like. i'm a little is pessimistic. i do think reality matters, as we've been saying. we are going to hit the cliff in all kinds of ways. be any fiscal cliff in the real clip in 2013 is you can't sustain these deficits obviously for too long because they can't keep printing money and expect the world to take it or buy treasury notes forever. the economy is slow and they will be coming into another dip. they are foreign policy challenges i think the next president will have a moment between november 7, i agree just to begin nov

't think anybody is doing anything deliberate, but i do think the one number that should concern the obama forces is the fact that he is -- if rasmussen is correct, that far below 50% because historically the undecideds in the last weeks, indeed sometimes it's the last few days of an election, the undecided us usually shift against the incumbent simply because the incumbent is the one they know the most about, and therefore the incumbent is the one that has the edge in having people make up their minds one way or the other. i know in my own first race, i was well behind my opponent who was at 48%. in the last ten days, i said, look, after all the money he's spent if he's only at 48%, that means 52% of people want somebody else, and it turned out i won. he got 48 1/2. connell: president is 48 in the rasmussen overall, he's up 2. and also up in the gallup tracking poll. >> i would say i think romney has had a rough few weeks here and i think it is pretty clear that the polls are moving in the direction of the president in ohio and florida, pennsylvania, and so on, iowa. but this is not -- th

didn't prepare him for the aggressive romney that i saw a few weeks ago on the sunday shows? i think they didn't prepare him. the president has to look presidential. i don't think president obama is going to call mitt romney a liar on the next debate. that's not presidential. he will be more aggressive. i don't think mitt romney is necessarily a liar, he just manages to convince himself that any position is fine at the time. ted kennedy said it best when romney debated ted kennedy, i'm the pro choice candidate, my opponent is the multiple choice candidate. mitt romney says whatever he has to say. there's no core belief there. that is going to be a problem for him in the general election. i think people are into that. i think they get that politicians say anything and obama doesn't do that. he pretty much tells it like it is. did he do a good job in the debate? no. i think he could have been more aggressive. >> i want to ask you about vice president biden yesterday, on the stump some people are calling it a gaffe, that they want to raise taxes by $1 trillion. guess
